Paws of Honor: Remembering with Gratitude this Memorial Day

This week, as flags fly and grills heat up, we pause to remember what Memorial Day is really about—sacrifice, service, and the deep cost of freedom. It’s a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives defending the country we call home.

And if you’re like me, you might find your dog curled up beside you during moments of reflection—offering silent comfort, presence, and loyalty that mirrors the values we remember on this day.

Reflecting with Gratitude

Memorial Day isn’t about celebration—it’s about honor. And one of the best ways we can show honor is to live with gratitude, faith, and purpose.

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13

Whether you knew someone personally or you’re simply reflecting as a citizen, let today be a chance to say thank You—to God, to those who served, and to the families who carry on without them.

Service Dogs & Their Sacrifice

Memorial Day also reminds us of the unsung canine heroes who served alongside soldiers—search-and-rescue dogs, military working dogs, and therapy dogs who supported our veterans in both war and peace. Their stories reflect bravery without question and loyalty without end.

If your dog isn’t a service dog but a loyal protector of your heart and home—you still know that kind of loyalty. It’s written in their eyes and expressed in every tail wag and gentle nudge.

A Prayer for Memorial Day

Heavenly Father,
We lift up every soul who gave their life in the name of freedom.
Comfort the families who mourn.
Teach us to live with grateful hearts and bold faith.
And may our lives reflect the kind of love that lays itself down.
Amen.

From the Trail to the Table

As we spend time this weekend with our families (and furry friends), let’s make space to remember. Maybe that’s a quiet moment on a hike, a flag raised at your campsite, or a story shared over dinner.

This week, I’m keeping things simple—but meaningful.
